Doctors Just Wanna Have Fun
Juggling between conferences, patients, on-call emergencies, raising a family and a being a public figure of medicine, doctors need a break!
So where do they find the time?
For Stella, she was able to squeeze me in a few hours before her flight!
Stella is a doctor, but not just any doctor… she’s a surgeon! Her expertise is in Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat).
“Dr. Lee earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from Duke University before attending the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Yale University, followed by a fellowship in Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at Johns Hopkins University. Before joining the Brigham faculty, Dr. Lee served as the Division Chief for Sinonasal Disorders and Allergy in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for ten years.”
Stella had a doctor’s conference in Japan during the prime time sakura season.
I’m not quite sure if she had the time to enjoy the outdoors in between the conferences and work, but she finally sure did with me on her last day!
She said she didn’t get the chance to truly explore Japan. She was tight on time, so she asked for my help to give her the “Spark Notes” version of Asakusa. 2.5 hours is all you need!
Our theme for this year: “Health is wealth!”
What happens when two health conscious people explore Japan… how can we avoid a blood sugar spike??
Stella and I were both monitoring our sugars. It was hilarious.
Although she is not diabetic, she lives as though she is. She is careful of her salt and carb intake, since it can make you feel tired and lethargic. So I showed her foods that are somewhat “healthy.”
Japan is known for their food science and manipulation of their fruits (i.e. cube watermelon).
I recommended these strawberries and put her through a taste test. Is white or red better? We both agreed red strawberries tasted better, since white strawberries lack the tarty taste we love so much. I’m glad she tried it though!
Buddha Bathing Ritual
Visitors sprinkle water over statues of Buddha to represent purification and good fortune. This celebration is done during early to mid April. Thai Buddhists celebrate Songkran, which is a traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. There were festive floats on the middle of the street that day.
Water is believed to flow and wash away all bad omens during this time.

Rickshaw Time!
This was my first time riding the rickshaw! It was picture-perfect, especially during cherry blossom season. We took the most scenic route by the water.
The local ladies loved my outfit and took a photo of me! (not with me LOL)
Stella watched me on “The Reluctant Traveler” and decided to hit me up. She loves the show so much that she is following the exact same path that Eugene Levy went on. Her next stop is Costa Rica! Did you know there is a Season 2?
